People throughout the country rely on good neighbors to create lasting friendships that help their communities thrive. On September 28, take time to observe National Good Neighbor Day. This is an ideal time to reflect on the meaning of good neighbors. It’s usually the simple acts of kindness or an occasional helping hand that create lifelong memories. How did National Good Neighbor Day start?
In the early 70’s, Becky Mattson from Montana started the effort to create a national day to recognize the importance of good neighbors. She succeeded in getting three presidents (Nixon, Ford and Carter) and several governors to issue proclamations. In 2003, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution making September 28 National Good Neighbor Day.
Building good relationships with your neighbors is even more important in condo and homeowner associations. In addition to sharing common areas, every owner has a stake in the community. Getting involved and creating neighborhood relationships makes a big difference in how you and your neighbors feel about your community. Creating rapport with your neighbors starts with a smile and a friendly hello.
Can you count on your neighbors? Are you comfortable working out minor problems? Good relationships with neighbors and open communication are key to resolving minor concerns before they become major problems when you live in an HOA. Neighbors helping neighbors and working together make your community a more pleasant place to live.
This year on National Good Neighbor Day, get to know your neighbors a little better. Think about what it takes to be a good neighbor and take action. Become a community volunteer. Ask a Board member if they need help. Reach out to new people in the community. There are many ways to be a good neighbor, so keep an eye open for opportunities.
Today is about acknowledging and appreciating a good neighbor. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you.
